We are in the midst of a biodiversity crisis. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, almost 500 species have been declared extinct in the last decade alone. While there is a multiplicity of explanations for this trend, one major cause is crimes against wildlife. For this scope of this issue, wildlife crimes have been defined as animal smuggling, illegal transportation, and abuse. The following pages will discuss how such crimes have become the fourth most-profitable form of organized crime in the world, a big business fueled by economic, cultural, and medicinal gains. The articles will explore how species such as corals, tarantulas, pythons, turtles and pangolins have suffered due to humanity’s crimes against wildlife. As you are reading, we encourage you to think about the way that these crimes affect animals, and thus, by proxy, harm us. We hope that you will find lessons and inspiration in the way that some of our writers have been able to make the world a safer place for wildlife.
